General
  • What is a brief definition of the SmarterMeasure Learning Readiness Indicator?
The SmarterMeasure Learning Readiness Indicator is an assessment which quantifies a learner’s level of readiness for studying in an online or technology-rich environment. It measures attributes that are internal to the student such as levels of motivation, procrastination, willingness to ask for help, locus of control and dominant learning styles. It also measures life factors that are external to the student such as the number of hours per week they have available to study, support from employers and family, whether or not they have a dedicated place to study, as well as general health and finances. It also measures skills sets including technical competency (computing and Internet usage), on-screen reading skills, and typing skills.

  • Should SmarterMeasure be used to determine whether or not a student should take an online or technology rich course?
By design, SmarterMeasure is not intended to be a gatekeeper. That is, SmarterMeasure is not designed to be a "make or break" test which determines if a student can take courses or not. Rather, SmarterMeasure is intended to be used as a diagnostic tool to help students be aware of their strengths and opportunities for growth as they take distance learning courses. The two main benefits of SmarterMeasure are that it makes the student aware of their attributes and skills and secondly that it fosters a dialogue between the student and their school about the sources for support that the school provides to help the student be successful. It is recommended that schools consider making the fact whether or not a student has completed SmarterMeasure a prerequisite for further distance learning courses, but not use the SmarterMeasure scores as gate keepers.

Yes. The SmarterMeasure system allows schools to export student's SmarterMeasure scores into an Excel, comma delimited file or tab delimited file. Schools can then manipulate this data to arrange it in an appropriate format to be uploaded into their student information systems. At most schools students tend to take SmarterMeasure is groups - typically near the beginning of a semester. Most schools which do export data find it adequate to export / upload SmarterMeasure data about once per month. However, if schools want SmarterMeasure data automatically syncronized with their system they can use our free developer APIs. There is no cost for the standard data export feature and schools can conduct as many data exports as they need.
Administration
  • What is the "Test ID" column that appears when I export into an Excel spreadsheet?
When a person starts taking SmarterMeasure, the system automatically generates a unique test taker ID for them. Think of this as their SmarterMeasure ID number. To keep track of individual scores the system can not use an item such as their name because there may be several John Does taking the test. This number has nothing to do with the student's ID number at their school, or any other number. It is just a unique identifier that our system generates. It really should have no purpose to the schools.
